Eating well and making healthy choices over the weekend can be difficult. Here are a few tips to keep you on track this weekend:
- Eat breakfast as soon as you wake up
If you skip breakfast it upsets your appetite and metabolism for the rest of the day. If you are planning to out for breakfast or brunch, have something light before you go – a small tub of yoghurt or fruit will suffice.
- If you’ll be out and about, make sure you have some healthy snack options in your bag
Dried fruit, fresh fruit, lean biltong or unsalted nuts are good options. If you aren’t prepared you are more likely to buy something along the way. Snacking regularly also helps to control your appetite, so if you go out you will be able to better manage your portions.
- Keep your water intake up
During the week you are usually in a routine and it’s easier to get enough fluids in. On the weekend you may find it more difficult. Make sure to carry a bottle of water with you and order a glass with your coffee or drink when out.
- Keep your alcohol intake down
Weekends mean more socializing and often an increased intake of alcohol. Keep tabs on how much you drink. Choose lower-calorie drinks and mixers and drink water in between. Be aware of the bad food choices that you may make when drinking and try to curb these!
- Keep active
Incorporate at least one exercise session into the weekend. Start the day with a jog or walk, go for a hike or a walk on the beach or book into a Saturday morning gym class to set the tone of the weekend!
