If you are visiting an Italian restaurant, use these tips to ensure you order the healthiest meal possible.

Italian restaurants often offer chicken or fish options. Choose these with a side of veg or salad for the healthiest option. If choosing pizza or pasta, use the following tips:

Pizza

  • Choose small or medium sized if you have the option. You can always have a green salad on the side to fill the gap
  • Choose a thin based pizza
  • Avoid the following toppings: salami, pepperoni, bacon and extra cheese should be given a wide berth
  • Choose these toppings: onions, chillies, mushrooms, peppers, spinach, olives, asparagus, pineapple, tuna, prawns, chicken, avo

Pasta

  • Don’t be afraid to order a starter portion of pasts as a main meal. Add a side salad if you feel that it won’t be enough
  • Opt for tomato-based sauces rather than cream or cheese filled sauces
  • Use the same discretion as you would for pizza toppings when choosing your pasta fillings
